Australian surfer Brian Smith founded Ugg in 1978 when he moved to California. Sheepskin was always a favorite material, and Southern California carried a relaxed, chill lifestyle that in Smith’s opinion was the perfect place to create a label based on the comfort of sheepskin. When the label finally launched, its soft, sheepskin boots were quickly adopted into surf culture and became a staple down the coast of California. The Ugg appreciation eventually spread to ski shops, presenting a shoe that was as comfortable as it was stylish. Ugg presents a sense of practicality and approachability that is able to encapsulate a wide audience, bringing in a clientele from around the world. As the brand continued to grow, it became a mainstream staple for people that live a casual, yet active, lifestyle.
